What Should My Macros Be To Lose Weight

What Should My Macros Be To Lose Weight – I will keep this post as simple and short as possible and highlight the main points. This post is for all my friends who are unfamiliar with macros and the “IIFYM/Flexible Diet lifestyle”, whoever you are.

Although the flexible diet is technically defined as a “diet”, I actually hate the term. Yes, you eat a certain way based on a certain goal in mind, but it’s called flexi for a reason.

With the flexible diet, or “If It Fits Your Macros” (IIFYM), you get a specific amount of each macronutrient that you can choose to consume as you wish.

For example, you don’t have to choose a protein bar as a snack every day just because it’s the “healthy” option. If you look at the Kind line and KitKat below, you’ll see that they actually have very similar macros. If you really fancy a KitKat one day, you can easily change the Kind line and make it fit your macros. That’s its beauty and flexibility!

I think this is what sets this diet approach apart from others. You will not be given a strict meal plan to follow, or you will be asked to eliminate certain food groups. You can literally eat whatever you want and make it fit. This approach is not only more fun, but also much more SUSTAINABLE. Don’t you agree that you would be more willing to stick to a diet that includes chocolate, pizza, ice cream or whatever you fancy?

I would also like to point out that “watching” macros is not something you need to do forever when you first start. Taking a year or even a few months to monitor your macros will give you accurate information about portion sizes and macronutrient ratios that will allow you to continue to BEST achieve your goals without tracking in the future.

Macros or macronutrients are the main components that make up the content of food. They consist of protein, carbohydrates and fat and are usually measured in grams.

And is what ultimately determines whether you lose weight, gain weight, or maintain your current weight. Eat more calories than you save and you will gain weight. Consume fewer calories than your maintenance and you will lose weight. Eat the same and you will stay the same. Does it make sense so far?

Yes, it is the number of calories that ultimately determines weight loss or weight gain, but macronutrient ratios are what influence body composition and optimal health rather than just weight loss or weight gain.

A proper macronutrient balance is KEY (along with lifting weights) to help you achieve that lean, “toned” body.

Each macronutrient serves a purpose in the body, and being a little more concise in your tracking (rather than just tracking your calories) will allow you to take smarter, more scientifically proven actions and optimize your potential to reach your specific goals (fat loss, muscle gain, etc.).

Fat Loss Myths To Ditch Right Away

Protein is important for building muscle and maintaining muscle mass. You actually damage muscle tissue when you exercise, so we need adequate protein intake to repair this damaged tissue!

Carbohydrates are the body’s most important source of energy. It is broken down into glucose before being absorbed into the blood. Glucose is what the body uses for energy, including not only exercise, but also normal daily activities and just breathing. Adequate carbohydrates ensure that we do not burn muscle (protein) for energy instead. Carbohydrates also play a big role in the health of the thyroid gland (the engine of metabolism).

Oils are a source of essential fatty acids. They are necessary for the diet because the body cannot make them on its own. Adequate fat intake is necessary for the production of vital hormones (including estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, serotonin and various others). These hormones are essential for maintaining cell processes and are essential for brain development and nerve function.

The first thing you need to do is download an app that tracks not only calories, but also macronutrients. MyFtinessPal is my favorite, but there are other great ones (MyMacros, LoseIt, LifeSum) that have received positive reviews.

Next, you need to buy a food scale. Any basic thing that measures grams and ounces will do. I got mine cheap from Amazon and have been using it for 2 years now, there will be zero problems. Here it is:

The more comfortable you are with tracking, the more likely you are to stick with it! Therefore, try to keep track of the food you take.

Weigh the food on the scale or click on the barcode icon to scan the item. Get into the habit of watching

Use your age, weight, activity level, etc. to determine what your “maintenance calories” should be. There are tons of online calculators that impress. I personally am not a fan of these because I have found them wrong for most people!

How To Break The Weight Loss Plateau

In addition to getting all of this information above, it’s important to more accurately determine your current caloric intake and dietary history, regardless of whether you’re maintaining it or not.

In my next post, I will tell you how to BEST determine your macros based on your current habits and goals.

In the meantime, START tracking your food intake to find out how many calories you’re eating. This data will ultimately be necessary for us to be able to set up your macros optimally to achieve your goals as best as possible!

How To Calculate Macros

A flexible diet is free of food restrictions. Yes, you can eat chocolate, provided you stay within your daily macro goals.

Understanding how to calculate and set your daily macro goals is one of the most important aspects of the macro diet.

Everyone is different (yes, you are a unique snowflake), so most experienced macro coaches will make adjustments as their clients progress.

Your ability to accurately calculate and set your macros will largely determine whether you reach your fitness goals and how quickly you get there.

Nutrition Made Easy. How To Count Your Macros Without A Scale

Your metabolism is crucial to your overall health and lifestyle, how much energy you burn and how much of each macronutrient you should eat.

The most important things to calculate are REE (Resting Energy Expenditure) and TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure).

You can quickly calculate your TDEE here, but it’s the number of calories your body burns in a day.

Eating less than that means losing weight, eating more means gaining weight. We call this energy balance.

How To Cook Food Macros For The Week To Lose Weight

The Mifflin-St Jeor formula is one of the most popular and respected macroformulas used to calculate resting energy expenditure (REE). Your REE is the energy required to keep your body at rest.

Tip: When solving the equation yourself, remember your high school math class about order of operations: (PEMDAS from left to right).

Since most people don’t lie in bed all day and do absolutely nothing, we need to find movement expenditure, or TDEE.

Sometimes it’s not black and white for all people, but for the sake of simplicity, let’s imagine it is.

Some recommend reducing calorie intake by 500 calories. Cutting 500 calories is not good advice as it is not adapted to your body type.

For example, if you eat 3250 calories per day, 20% becomes 650 calories, reducing your calorie intake to 2600 calories per day.

At 20%, you’ll most likely gain fat and muscle, so it’s important to start small and work your way up if you want lean gains.

Only with this knowledge can you start towards your goal. Counting macros is a very effective way to lose weight (read some stories here).

Losing weight and losing fat are two different things (you don’t want to lose muscle). Therefore, ratios between macronutrients can be important.

Now that you have your REE and TDEE, you can decide how much of each macronutrient you should consume.

So if our subject weighs 195 lbs (88 kg) and is doing a moderate weight training program, the protein intake would be 161 grams.

Healthy fats can be incredibly helpful in reaching your body composition goals, but they also affect our hormones – too little fat in our diet can be harmful.

Flexible Plant Based Dieting: How To Use Macronutrients To Build Muscle And Burn Fat

Most research (and again, there are many opinions) supports that 20-30% of total TDEE calories should come from the fat macro. Let’s use 25% and a starting point from the middle of the path.

Some people may prefer 30%, especially if you follow a higher-fat diet such as keto, Paleo, or Atkins.

Your body uses carbohydrates to make glucose, its preferred fuel or energy, and they’re what keep us going.

A low-carb diet is a way of putting yourself in a negative energy balance. Counting macros does this with a more scientific approach.
