Intermittent fasting is an effective tool for weight loss. There are many different approaches, each of which has potential for fat loss. While skipping breakfast isn’t always part of a successful fasting plan, it’s a common way to start.
“For some people, skipping breakfast is a form of intermittent fasting that has been linked to reduced inflammation and reduced body fat,” says Lauren Popek, registered dietitian and director of clinical nutrition at Orlando Health. “If needed, I usually recommend short-term fasting methods. Often, when someone finds they’ve reached a plateau with their weight or health goals, changing their diet or lifestyle can help initiate change.”
“I think every meal is important, but breakfast definitely sets the tone for the day. Because food is the body’s fuel, breakfast helps boost your energy,” says Natalie Rizzo, a registered dietitian based in New York City. “If you skip breakfast, you’ll have low energy levels and poor concentration.” 6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e
Rizzo explained that skipping breakfast was associated with greater weight gain, higher total BMI, and increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
You Don’t Have To Eat Diet Food
Delaying your first meal of the day can increase your body’s hunger signals, leading to overeating when you decide to eat later.
“If you make a daily, healthy breakfast a part of your life, you’ll be less likely to overeat later, and more likely to lose excess weight and keep it off,” says Laura Burack, MS, RD, CDN.
She explained: When you skip breakfast, you make up for lost calories or energy at night when you don’t really need it.
If you decide that skipping breakfast is the right choice for you, it’s still important to pay attention to what kind of nutrition you’re getting for the rest of the day. Choosing to fast is just as important as how you choose to break the fast.

“As I suggest with every meal, pairing high-fiber carbohydrates with protein and fat is physiologically very important,” Burak says. “These three macronutrients regulate blood sugar and help prevent cravings later in the day.”
She suggests a slice of whole-wheat toast with natural peanut butter and some berries, eggs with smashed avocado on bread, or Greek yogurt with nuts and fruit.
The most compelling reason to skip breakfast is if you’re not hungry, says Popek. While there are benefits to eating as soon as you wake up, they don’t outweigh the disadvantages of forcing yourself to eat when you don’t want to.
“Listen to your body and see if skipping breakfast has health consequences, such as lack of energy, weight gain, or lack of essential nutrients,” says Popek.

If you decide to skip breakfast, Popeck suggests limiting the fat and sugar commonly found in beverages, processed foods, and fast food.
Burak says that if you have an unhealthy breakfast or don’t eat breakfast at all, serving your meal outside is the best option. But it is still far from ideal.
“Compare eating a sugary donut to eating a high-protein, heart-healthy egg and avocado toast,” Burak says. “A single donut can make breakfast worse than skipping it altogether, so make sure you’re choosing a healthy option.”

And don’t forget smoothies, a favorite for anyone who enjoys a portable, nutritious shake in the morning. Mix protein-rich yogurt, nuts, or seeds with your choice of fruits, vegetables, and milk, and you’ve got a delicious meal in a cup!” says Burak. “I can safely call myself a smoothie connoisseur. Everyone is different. For some people, skipping breakfast and intermittent fasting can help them lose weight and stay healthy. For others, it can lead to overeating and an undesirable relationship with food.
“If you love breakfast and make healthy choices, that’s great,” Burak said. “If you don’t want to eat it, make sure it doesn’t challenge yourself and turn into extra calories at the end of the day.” What happens to your body if you don’t eat enough?
