So you want to start the Mediterranean diet, but you are not sure about one important thing: what you can eat?

The Mediterranean diet places more emphasis on lean proteins from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, legumes, fish, and poultry, good fats from olive oil, and some dairy products. .

To dig a little deeper into the guts of eating this way, I asked Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Ale Zosos, who comes from a large Greek family and has been eating this way since he was young. Through the dietetic lens of the Mediterranean diet plan (Ale shares his thoughts below as an expert in the field, all opinions are his own).

First, the Mediterranean diet is a plant-based diet, which means it is high in plant-based foods. One of the more natural things to do on a Mediterranean diet is to avoid or limit harmful processed foods. By eating more of the good stuff—plants, lean proteins, and good fats—we naturally cut back on unhealthy, processed foods high in sodium, refined sugar, and saturated fat.
