As PC hardware continues to accelerate, so does software, and the Windows operating system is no exception. This is especially true for startup time. However, when you’re ready, there are other performance factors to consider. Even the latest version of Windows isn’t immune to slowdowns, and not everyone is ready to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11. These tips for speeding up Windows work equally well whether you’re using version 10 or 11.
Tips To Make Your Pc Run Faster
The problem with many articles that tell you how to speed up Windows is that they tell you to disable some of the most interesting features of the operating system, such as visual animations. Most of our tips show ways to speed up your Windows system without compromising its appearance and functionality. Most tips can be done for free, but some require you to spend a little money on software or hardware. For people with older low-powered machines who want to add speed but don’t mind the extra goodies, you’ll find some tips at the end of this list

Note that you should beware of these “Speed up your PC!” ads for registry cleaners that often lead to malware. Microsoft definitely does not support the use of registry cleaners (Opens in a new window) for Windows 10.
, although we didn’t list it as a tip because everyone should be doing it anyway. From time to time, go to Settings > Windows Update to see if there are any security and reliability updates that you should install. Your computer may run faster after an update because it may include hardware driver updates. Do this even if you don’t want a major feature update – you can defer these major updates in the same settings section.
There are some third-party system cleanup utilities for Windows 10 that can speed up your computer, but this category of software isn’t as popular as it used to be. Most of these utilities increase PC performance, but sometimes only slightly. There are many malicious downloads that claim to speed up your PC, so make sure you’re using a proven product. Iolo System Mechanic is a good option, for example.
Although the situation is improving, the problem with some new computers is that they come with a lot of junk software, sometimes called virus software, junkware, or PUPs for potentially unwanted programs. A few years ago, a Lenovo computer we tested had about 20 so-called utilities that would occasionally pop up and interfere with our work. Even Microsoft is not without fault in this game, as it has included several mixed reality games and programs on the PC that you may not be interested in.

Right-click any unwanted program tile in the Start menu and select Remove. This will remove the program immediately. You can also right-click the Start button on the Windows logo and select Programs and Features at the top. Or type Programs in the search box next to the Start button.
You can usually find the culprits by sorting the list of installed programs by your PC’s manufacturer. Other good options are to sort by Recent to see if there are any apps you didn’t know you had installed; or by size to get rid of extra large items you don’t need. If you find unwanted programs, select them and click Remove. Unfortunately, you can only draw one at a time. Set aside about half an hour for this project if you have a bunch of viruses.
Don’t forget to take an ax to the apps you installed yourself but no longer want – and the software you don’t want installed with the software
Remember that Windows 10 and 11 have two types of apps: traditional desktop apps and modern Microsoft Store (formerly Windows Store) apps. You’ll find both types on the Apps & Features page of the modern Settings app. For non-Store apps, a Control Panel opens where you can uninstall good old desktop apps. Either way, you can sort them by size, install date or name, or search for a specific app.

One of the reasons uninstalling programs improves performance is that many programs load processes at startup and take up valuable RAM and CPU. If you’re in Programs and Features, you can also click Turn Windows features on or off and scan the list to see if there’s anything you’re not using. For more information on what to remove, read How to Rid Your Computer of Crapware.
As already mentioned, many programs install side processes that start every time the PC is started, and some of them are not necessary for the constant operation of the system. Compared to Windows 7, where you had to run the MSCONFIG utility, newer versions of Windows give you an easier way to limit what starts at startup from the updated Task Manager.
The easiest way to bring up the task manager is to press Ctrl-Shift-Esc. Switch to the Startup tab and you’ll see all the programs that load when Windows starts. The dialog even has a column showing the Start effect for each one. The Status column shows whether the program is enabled to run at startup. You can right-click on any entry to change this status. It’s usually pretty easy to spot things you don’t want to run. For example, if you never use iTunes, you probably don’t need iTunesHelper running all the time.
In the Start menu, type Disk Cleanup to open the trusted utility that has been part of Windows for several OS generations. Disk Cleanup finds junk on your computer, such as temporary files, offline web pages, and installer files, and suggests removing them all at once. You may even notice that your basket is cracking at the seams – this usually only has a noticeable effect on speed when your drive is almost full.

If you don’t have a regularly scheduled disk defragmenter, install it from Disk Optimizer, which you can find by typing its name into the search box next to the Start button. Note that if your primary drive is an SSD then you don’t need to worry about defragmenting as there are no moving parts reading the drive.
An even newer way to save storage usage is to enable the Storage Sense option (see image above). It automatically frees up space by deleting temporary files and recycle bin items. For complete information on how to use this feature, see How to free up hard drive space in Windows.
Windows 10 and 11 manage memory more efficiently than earlier versions of the OS, but more memory can always make a PC run faster. If you’re still using the desktop version of Tower, this article can show you how to add RAM. The major RAM manufacturer websites (Crucial, Kingston, Corsair) offer product finders that show you what type of RAM your computer is using, and the prices are quite reasonable. You can get high-performance 8GB of DDR4 RAM for under $50.
If about $50 is too much, and your computer is old, has a hard drive instead of a solid state drive (see below), and is low on RAM, you can try using ReadyBoost with a USB drive. It stores data in the cache memory of the portable storage device to speed up memory access that would be slower with a spinning hard drive. Navigate to the File Explorer entry of the USB key, right-click to open Properties, and switch to the ReadyBoost tab to get started. For most newer systems, this feature will not be available and will not improve performance.
Ways To Speed Up Windows 10
However, adding RAM isn’t always possible, so not everyone will be able to use this tip. With some modern Windows devices, such as the Surface Pro tablets, this is not possible. Gaming and business laptops often still allow you to upgrade your RAM, but this is becoming less common. Newer slim ultrabooks and convertibles usually have fixed memory.
Installing and running demanding programs like Adobe Photoshop is much faster with an SSD. An SSD also benefits Windows significantly at boot time. It’s easy to move Microsoft Store apps from your spinning hard drive to your SSD from the Apps & Features settings page.
It makes sense to reset the internal bootable hard drive to speed up the system, and if you’re using a laptop, that might be an option as well. But an external solid-state drive with a USB 3.0 connection can also give you a speed boost in memory-intensive applications. To find out which device to install, check out our list of the best SSDs.
You can run the built-in Windows Defender or a third-party app to do this, but among the anti-malware programs you’re better off with is lead security analyst Neil Rubenking. Don’t forget to use constant malware protection as well. Some AV products have a
