The FDA is currently investigating more than 500 reports that appear to link dog foods marketed as “grain-free” to dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. The FDA has been warning about foods based on peas, lentils or potatoes since July 2018, but the statement released late last week is the first time the agency has identified the 16 brands.

The brands are sorted by the number of cases associated with them, which ranged from 67 to 10:

Most of the reports were associated with dry dog formulations, but raw food, semi-moist food and wet food were included. The FDA has not advised owners to change their pets’ diets.

“We’re not saying don’t use these brands, we’re just telling pet owners to work directly with their veterinarians because we’re still investigating,” said Lindsay Haake, an FDA spokeswoman.

Veterinary cardiologists told NBC News that they are not waiting for the FDA investigation to conclude before advising owners to stop feeding suspect pets.

“If a dog comes to us and we learn in the history that it is on a grain-free diet, we recommend switching to a non-grain-free diet,” says Dr. Anna Gelzer, a veterinary cardiologist and professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. “There is no scientifically proven benefit to eating grain-free, so why take a chance?”

In a statement, the Pet Food Institute, whose members make 98 percent of pet food and treats in the U.S., said it and its members “have been calling on nutritionists, veterinarians and product safety specialists for more than a year to better understand whether there is an association between dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and dietary PFI agree with the FDA’s assertions that this is a complex issue with many factors that requires scientific evaluation.

If you think about wolves, they can ingest the contents of ruminants that they prey on, so they can certainly eat grain. There is no scientific reason to go grain-free.

Heart failure is a known problem for larger dog breeds, such as Great Danes and German Shepherds, Gelzer said. The breeds most often reported to the FDA for heart disease were golden retrievers, mixed breeds, and Labrador retrievers.

But recently, the condition started showing up in smaller breeds, which is what got the attention of veterinarians and eventually the FDA.

“For us at Penn, we started seeing cases in late 2017 that were unusual because they were in smaller breeds like springer spaniels and beagles that you don’t typically see with canine dilated cardiomyopathy,” Gelzer said.

Knowing that there had been studies showing that diet could play a role in the development of heart disease in dogs, “we started researching what each owner was feeding.”

Eventually, Gelzer and others found that there was a common denominator: grain-free dog food, which replaced grains with substitutes such as lentils, peas and chickpeas.

What Is Human Grade Vs. Feed Grade Dog Food?

Gelzer doesn’t know exactly how the grain-free pet food trend started, but believes it had to do with consumer demand for what appeared to be a healthier alternative.

“It didn’t come from the scientific side,” Gelzer said. “If you think about wolves, they can ingest the contents of ruminants that they feast on, so they can certainly eat grains. There is no scientific reason to go grain-free.”

Generally when dogs develop a food allergy, it’s to a protein, Gelzer said. So veterinarians often switch to a food with a different protein source to treat the problem.

One of the big problems with DCM is that dogs don’t show symptoms of the disease — lethargy, exercise intolerance, shortness of breath — until they’re very sick, Gelzer said.

How Often And How Much Should I Feed My Dog?

She points to the example of clients who came in with a very sick dog diagnosed by DCM. The family had a second dog that appeared healthy, but since both were eating a grain-free dog food, Gelzer suggested taking the second dog in to be checked out.

What we don’t know is whether the [foods] used in these diets instead of grains are causing the problem. It is also possible that it could be some kind of poison.

“When we evaluated that dog, it also had reduced cardiac function, but it was still subclinical,” she said. “The dog did not look abnormal because it was in the early stages.”

Gelzer is not sure what the outcome will be if these dogs switch to a different feed in the early phase. “Some get better when the diet changes,” she said. “Some stay the same and maintain the status quo with medications and some die despite changing their diet and receiving all the heart medications we can give.”

How To Find The Best Tasting Dog Food

While it’s clear that pet owners are feeding these brands because they’re “trying to do what they see as the right thing for their dogs, unless the dog has a documented grain sensitivity, it’s probably not the risk at this point.” feeding these products,” said Dr. Bruce Kornreich, a veterinary cardiologist in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Cornell University’s Veterinary College and associate director of the Cornell Feline Health Center.

“What we don’t know is whether [the foods] used in these diets in place of grains are causing the problem,” Kornreich said. “It’s also possible that it could be some kind of poison.”

If a companion dog shows symptoms of the heart condition, including decreased energy, coughing or difficulty breathing, the FDA urges owners to contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.
