This is a flexible time management technique. You need to spend a certain amount of time focusing on the task at hand. Once you get through this period, you can take a break.
I worked until the timer went off, during which time distractions arose, including social media and overthinking. But I was focused on not letting myself get distracted, so I worked until the end.
Step 4 is to put a star on the paper when the timer goes off and reward yourself with a 5 minute break.
Step 5 is to continue working for 25 minutes followed by a 5 minute break.

One of the many things I want to learn from Tracy: insight into how the buzzword “eat that frog” can be a smarter task, not a harder motto. I wonder if eating frogs makes you more productive?
First, the phrase eat this frog might require some explanation. It goes back to a quote from Mark Twain, taken as a visual way of encouraging people to do their big tasks first: “If eating frogs is your business, it’s best done in the morning,” Twain once said. “If your task is to eat two frogs, you’d better eat the biggest one first.”
Tracy changed Twain’s famous quote to “If you have to eat two frogs, eat the ugliest one first.” In other words, Tracy said, “If you have two important tasks in front of you, do them first. Start with the biggest, hardest, and most important tasks.”

The original version of Eat That Frog was published in 2001. The concept follows Tracy’s general philosophy on procrastination: He says that everyone does it, but the difference between successful and unsuccessful people is what they choose to procrastinate on. “We thought it would sell a few copies and we didn’t think the publisher would lose money on it,” Tracy said. “Look, it’s popular.”
So much so that millions of people around the world have eaten their own frogs thousands of times. In a December virtual interview, Tracy showed off a folder of letters he’s received over the years from Eat That Frog worshipers, from Romania to Rochester. They are full of stories about how the book changed their lives. Many said the changes were so dramatic they made them millionaires.
Which brings me back to the central question: How does eating frogs actually increase productivity?
I told Tracy I thought I was doing the right thing. I start the day with a to-do list that I write down at the end of the previous day. Some take 20 minutes. Some last for hours or even days. Many tasks are based on deadlines, some are things that I need to do or complete so that others can complete their work. I love the feeling of crossing things off a list – who doesn’t? – so I usually go for the shorter ones first.

These little tasks are nice and important, but they don’t make me or my organization (or, for me, the weekly). Tracy says that when people ask him how you eat a frog, he gives a ready answer, a quote from management guru Peter Drucker. “He used to ask, ‘what’s the most valuable use of my time right now?'” Tracy said. “I think that’s one of the most important questions an organization can ask in any business.”
“Most people put off the most important tasks,” Tracy added. “Why? Because it’s so much easier to put it down and do something else. But then it becomes like the elephant in the room.”
Instead of starting small, Tracy recommends breaking the biggest tasks down into smaller parts first, which she calls slicing and dicing. Another tip: use the 80/20 rule. Since 20% of your activities make up 80% of what you do, focus on the top 20%. Tracy says the 80/20 rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, is one of the more sensible time management steps anyone can take.
Tracy said there are many other ways to eat frogs. The biggest reward is what Tracy calls the positively addictive taste of endorphins—and the increased clarity, confidence, and empowerment they trigger. This is something that business people of all levels can appreciate.

While I certainly don’t see myself eating amphibians anytime soon, I can say that Mr. Twain is right. “Eat the Frog” is your most important and often most difficult task before anything else.
