How To Qualify For Federal Student Loan Forgiveness – 2021 Update: For the latest change to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness system, visit our blog. If you have federal student loans, work in the public or public sector, and were previously ineligible for the PSLF program, you may now be eligible.
Many student loan borrowers spend years paying off their debt, but student loan forgiveness programs can help shorten that time. My friend Kathryn works at a non-profit organization in Washington that provides therapy to middle school children with special needs. She recently expressed her burden of paying off her student loans. I told her to look into the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. It was nice to hear that she already knew about it. But I was surprised that she refused to join because she did not believe that the government would keep its word.
How To Qualify For Federal Student Loan Forgiveness
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) was created in 2007 and signed into law by President George W. Bush. The program allows federal student loan borrowers to have their federal student debt forgiven after 10 years of government or 501(c)(3) employment. You must also make 120 qualified monthly payments under the income repayment plan.
Can Biden Forgive Student Loan Debt For College Undergraduates? It’s Complicated
It started as a way to encourage people to work in the public sector. Salaries are usually lower in the public sector, but the need is great.
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) allows certain federal student loan borrowers to have their loans forgiven after at least 10 years of public service employment. You must be working full-time for a qualified employer when you apply. While the prospect of having your college loan forgiven sounds appealing, the requirements are very strict.
Federal student loan borrowers seeking government employee forgiveness do not have to make payments until September 30, 2021.
The other good news is that if you have qualifying federal loans that are not delinquent and you work full-time for an eligible employer during the suspension, you may still qualify for a PSLF loan.
Education Department Announces Major Changes To Student Loan Forgiveness
Many Americans currently enrolled in PSLF are very worried. Public service loan forgiveness turned out to be more difficult than people first thought it would be.
By the end of June 2019, more than 110,000 PSLF applications had been submitted, but only 1,216 (or about 1.1%) had been approved.
In 2016, the Department of Education denied loan forgiveness commitments (under PSLF) to four individuals who had dedicated their careers to public service. Jamie Rudert served elderly disabled Vietnam veterans and their families. Michelle Quintero-Millan provided legal services to unaccompanied immigrant minors at the US-Mexico border. Jeffrey Burkhart worked to improve the public safety system in the United States. Kate Voigt spoke to the audience about important issues facing immigrants in this country. All of them were initially told that they were eligible for the PSLF program because they worked for nonprofit organizations. However, in 2016, they were told that they did not actually qualify because they did not work for a 501(c)3 non-profit. The American Bar Association filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education on behalf of those plaintiffs.
If you have a large amount of student loan debt, Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) could potentially save you thousands of dollars. It can also shorten the years of your student loan repayments. You must meet all the criteria to qualify for college loan forgiveness, but the payoff can be worth it.
How To Apply For Biden’s Federal Student Loan Debt Forgiveness
Most borrowers are rejected because they do not meet the program’s requirements. Make sure you know the requirements as they are very strict about them.
Once you have met all of the above requirements, you can apply for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. When you apply, you must be working full-time for a qualified employer. You can complete the application online or download a copy and fill it out by hand.
Loans canceled under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program are tax-free. There are income-based repayment plans that can also lead to loan forgiveness outside of PSLF, but these are generally taxable. However, any student loan forgiveness you receive before 2025 will be tax-free thanks to the government’s Rescue Plan.
If you don’t work in the public sector or if public service loan forgiveness isn’t an option for you, there are other ways to pay off your student loans quickly.

Here’s Who Could Qualify For Student Loan Forgiveness
Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Education announced that it would expand the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program to reach more distressed borrowers. The changes will not only help future borrowers get their loans forgiven, but will also be retroactive to government employees who have been denied PSLF in the past. The latest means that about 22,000 borrowers with $1.74 billion in student debt will see their loans canceled.
The move marked the fifth round of student loan forgiveness issued by the Department of Education since President Joe Biden nominated Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. Three of those rounds were for defrauded students, while one round went to disabled borrowers. The PSLF review also makes it clear that the Biden administration is more aggressive on student loans than previous administrations. Simply put: Student loan forgiveness is gaining momentum.
However, compared to all outstanding student debt, these rounds of forgiveness are quite small: the soon-to-be canceled $11.24 billion in debt released in those five rounds represents less than 1% of all US debt for $1.7 trillion in student loans. .
At Biden’s request, the Department of Education is actively investigating whether the president has the legal authority to write off up to $50,000 per student loan borrower. This report, which was supposed to be published in the spring, has not yet appeared.
Support For Student Loan Forgiveness Varies Widely Between The American Public And Those With Loans
However, even if Biden’s team tells him he has the power to erase that debt, that doesn’t mean he will: He’s publicly supported forgiving just $10,000 and flat-out said no to writing off $50,000. per borrower. Not to mention, if Biden cancels student loans en masse via executive order, he’ll likely face immediate legal challenges — even his political ally, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, doesn’t think he’ll win.
During the campaign, Biden favored student loan forgiveness through congressional legislation. But his party’s slim majority in the US Senate makes it difficult to pass. Look no further than the “free community college” measure being left out of the reconciliation bill Tuesday to appease the likes of moderate Sen. Joe Manchin. Unless more forgiveness comes via executive order or Congress, that means the only avenue left is more Education announcements. However, the agency’s powers are limited to extending or changing existing forms of borrower protection — hardly the wholesale forgiveness that progressives seek.
