How To Make Your Moped Go Faster – Today we are going to look at different ways to increase the speed of an electric scooter. There are some weird ways to increase top speed, but what we’re going to focus on is how to remove the speed limiter from an e-scooter.
But first, we need to understand what an electronic speed limiter is and why it exists. I should mention that removing a speed limiter from an e-scooter may be illegal in some states. Check your local laws to see what the maximum speed limit is before doing this. Exceeding the legal maximum speed may require registration as a road vehicle.

An electronic speed limiter is a setting in the e-scooter’s software that limits the maximum speed to a certain threshold determined by the manufacturer.
It’s not like a mechanical limitation that can be easily removed. It’s built into the electric scooter’s control unit and can’t be removed as easily as it looks.
As a software setting, there are only two ways to remove it and run as fast as the motor and battery will allow.
Before we get our hands dirty, it’s easiest to make one first. If you just bought a new electric scooter and it doesn’t meet your speed needs, you can return it and buy a new one. If you’ve owned one for a long time, you can always sell it and make a difference for a new one. Check out the fastest scooters on the market in this article.

If you can do this, you are lucky. Actually, I am lucky. By owning the E-Twow Booster scooter (also known as the UScooter Booster), I can remove the limitation directly from the scooter’s display. Just press the button. Some scooters allow this so-called “sport mode”, but it’s only recommended for more power when going uphill.
My scooter is limited by the manufacturer to a maximum of 30 km/h. Actually it is also configurable because I have 5 levels: 6km/h, 12km/h, 20km/h, 25km/h and 30km/h. However, I also have sport modes that remove any speed limitations. This way I can get to 36 km/h, but if you go downhill it is possible and even higher.
You’ll notice that if you have the speed limit enabled, you can’t go faster than the set speed even if you’re going downhill. This is because the computer slows the engine down if the speed tries to increase.
This motion/booster option removes any kind of electronic restriction. This option will also increase speed and torque.

Now, your e-scooter will be limited only by physical conditions (max engine speed, wind, ramps, weight, etc.). The manufacturer recommends activating it just to increase. There are some safety concerns when removing this speed limit, as you could put yourself in danger.
P1 – Zero Start – If the scooter engine starts at 0 km or will wait until 5 km/h. This prevents you from accidentally pressing the accelerator when not moving.
This is a more complicated operation and usually involves voiding the warranty. I don’t like this warranty if it’s still very useful even a few months after buying it.
For example, the Xiaomi Mi M365 electric scooter cannot be unlocked directly from the display. It doesn’t even have a display, but a phone app. To remove the limitation, you need to rewrite the software on the scooter controller. This is a dangerous operation. If the process doesn’t go well, you can even brick your e-scooter (it won’t work at all).
How Fast Is 50cc And 125cc?
Still, the Xiaomi M365 can hit 30-31 km/h if you will, which is impressive considering it has tires.
Keeping the battery charged will help you achieve higher speeds and keep them up for longer. While a rechargeable battery won’t increase the scooter’s top speed, you’ll get faster acceleration and torque.
The lower the battery level, the lower the speed. If your battery is only 10% left, the electric scooter cannot go full speed. When you run out of juice, you’ll notice two things in order: poor acceleration and reduced top speed.
Depending on your model and specs, you’ll notice poor acceleration once the battery reaches around 40%.

When the battery is below 20-25%, you will notice that it is difficult or impossible to reach maximum speed.
Airless tires have less friction with the ground, so you’ll be able to reach higher speeds. Airless tires also improve mileage so you can drive more miles.
If your electric scooter is new, this is not a good choice. But if you have an old scooter with fuel injection on the gears (WD-40) or better, swapping them for a new one makes a huge difference. Over time, the gears will wear out and cause some friction with other parts.
Not all models do this, as it can be difficult to find batteries that fit in the tight spaces of an e-scooter. But, at least in theory, a better battery capable of delivering higher voltages will push you at higher speeds.
Are Vespas Motorcycles Or Scooters?
There are some caveats though, as the scooters are not built for higher voltages. Powerful batteries can damage electrical components or the motor itself.
A more complex solution would be difficult to implement. In theory, you could turn off the electric motor and get less torque but more revs. You will obviously void your warranty, so I don’t recommend it as a risky operation.
Many countries have legislation that imposes speed limits on unregistered vehicles such as e-scooters. This is why many manufacturers limit their scooters to a certain speed.
There are other reasons for this limitation, security being one of them. It is not safe to ride an electric scooter over 30 km/h. The risk of injury is very high because you can easily lose your balance and fall. Always wear protective equipment.

Not all scooters can exceed the manufacturer’s speed limit. The UScooter Booster and Xiaomi M365 obviously do, but these are mid-range scooters. Cheaper scooters will probably be limited to around 20-25 km/h, and even without a speed limit, many can’t go any higher. However, the limit is valid for descending into the valley.
If you’re not sure if it’s possible to lift the speed limit on your electric scooter model, look around. I found many videos on Youtube describing the process and results. Other opinions can be found in forums and even Amazon reviews.
Complex questions often lead to “it depends” answers. In this case, it is difficult to generalize and give a definitive answer. Some models, such as the UScooter Booster, can provide excellent performance without speed limitations.
Other models can be damaged because they drain a lot of battery power quickly and the engine is hot due to high revs. Unless your scooter has an easy option to cancel the speed limit, it’s probably not a good idea to do so by lighting up the controller or some other trick.

If you want to get a fast electric scooter and local laws allow it, look for it from the start. This will save you a lot of trouble.
The higher the speed, the greater the risk of an accident. It’s hard to keep your balance when you’re going over 30 km/h on such narrow tires. Probably ok in a straight line, but don’t turn at speed. Always slow down and defend.
Higher speeds will require more power to be delivered quickly. Even if the battery is capable of powering it, the heating process will damage it in the long run.
It will drain faster so you will have to charge it more often as you will get less range/charge. Lithium batteries have limited charge cycles, so keep in mind that charging faster may shorten battery life.
Why You Should Buy An Electric Scooter, Accessories You’ll Need
At high speeds, shocks and bumps affect the sides of the e-scooter more. It’s better if your scooter has suspension and tires, but it still causes faster wear.
Speed limits aren’t a bad thing after all, and there are some good reasons for manufacturers to do so. The main reasons for speed limits on e-scooters are safety concerns and laws.
Hi, my name is Richard and I have owned an electric scooter for many years. Electric scooters are fun and practical for commuting around town. The idea for this website came about when I bought my electric scooter, the UScooter Booster, for about $700.
