Computers have come a long way from the brown boxes of old, but even at speeds measured in gigahertz and gigabits per second, they sometimes have to wait. If you’re tired of solving Rubik’s Cubes while waiting for your computer to start up, here are some ways to speed up the process.

How To Make Your Computer Work Faster

Windows has a feature called Fast Startup that does exactly what it sounds like and is an obvious first stop in your search. Basically, it’s a kind of halfway mode between hibernation and shutdown. It won’t save your open apps like hibernation, but the OS under the hood will go into hibernation mode, which helps you boot into a clean state quickly.

However, restarting is unaffected, so if you’re having problems with Windows Update or your BIOS, you may need to restart your computer to perform those tasks instead of shutting down. It’s probably enabled by default on many computers, but if you’ve ever turned it off—or if it’s not enabled on a desktop you’ve built—you can easily flip the switch.

Open Control Panel and select Power Options > What do the Power Buttons do? You should see a checkbox next to Enable Fast Startup in the list of options. If it’s greyed out, first click the Change settings link at the top of that window and enable Quick Start. feature. Click Save Changes when done.

Some computers have a fast boot setting in the BIOS. Unlike Fast Startup in Windows, the Fast Startup setup (or whatever it’s called on your motherboard) performs some of the initial tests that run when your computer first starts. If you are overclocking or need regular access to the BIOS, you may want to turn this off, but most people can benefit from enabling it if it isn’t already.

Restart your computer, press Delete (or another key if prompted) to enter BIOS setup, and look for any fast boot settings in the menu. Some people suggest changing your boot order priority (making sure your hard disk is at the top of the list, rather than the DVD drive or the network boot), but I haven’t found this to move the needle very far.

Every motherboard is different, so look around your UEFI/BIOS settings to see if you can enable or disable any other features to speed up the boot process – your motherboard or computer manual can point you in the right direction.

The more programs you set to start at startup, the longer it will take for your computer to get into a usable state when you start. Some of your startup programs may need to run all the time, but many don’t.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to bring up the task manager to see what is being launched at startup. Click on more details below and go to the home tab. Along with the list of programs that start on your computer, as well as the Windows calculation, you will see how much it affects your startup time.

In the upper right corner you will see “Last BIOS Time” – this tells you how long it takes for your BIOS to take control of Windows, so if this number is more than a few seconds, you should check again. In the BIOS settings as described above. Sometimes, you might have a slow motherboard like me.

If you find a program on this list that you don’t need at startup – especially if it has a high startup impact – go to that program’s settings and deselect the option to start it in Windows. (For example, it’s worth starting Dropbox because you want it running all the time – but Epic Games Launcher doesn’t need to start with your computer.)

If you don’t see an option in that program’s startup settings, you can disable it from this Task Manager window to prevent it from starting at startup. You can open Settings > Apps > Startup and disable anything you don’t want to open at startup.

In the address bar to access your startup folder. Any shortcuts added here will be sent automatically on startup – so if there’s anything you don’t want sent here, delete it from the folder.

Finally, if you find any programs you don’t need through this process, uninstall them completely – it doesn’t hurt to run a malware scan while you’re at it. Bad actors running in the background can slow down your startup process.

Do It Now! The Latest Windows 11 Update Can Make Your Pc Run Faster

When Windows updates, it takes time to install those updates when you shut down—and, often, when you restart. If your computer is tired of saying “Windows is getting ready” after an update when you want to play some games, you should let Windows do its work when you are not using the computer. However, this implies that your machine allows automatic updates to run.

To do this without interrupting your work, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Change Active Time and click the Change button in Windows 10. Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options, click Active time and change the down Hand below if you are on Windows 11.

Tell Windows when you want to use the device the most from 9 to 5, and it will try to run automatic updates and restart when the computer is idle. Read more about how this works in our guide to controlling updates in Windows 10.

More and more modern computers have abandoned the old spinning mechanical hard drives and moved to much faster solid-state drives, or SSDs. If you’re still using one of the older discs, it’s time to upgrade. Programs will launch almost instantly compared to your old hard drive, but your computer will also start up much faster.

Any computer with a spinning disk should easily be upgraded to an SSD, like the Samsung 870 EVO, which you can get for as cheap as $65 for 500GB. If you don’t want to start from scratch, our guide will help you copy your Windows installation to an SSD. Please refer to the repair instructions for your specific laptop or desktop for complete steps, which will vary from machine to machine. Most computers don’t require a screwdriver (and the odd Torx bit).

Here’s the thing: booting fresh from your hard drive is always slower than returning from sleep. If you’re frustrated with how long it takes to start up your computer, consider putting it to sleep instead. Sleep may use slightly more power than a complete shutdown, but the difference in terms of electricity costs is negligible. Sleep can also be scarce if you have background programs that randomly wake up your computer, but we have a guide to fix that.

However, a place is still closed. For example, if I put my laptop in my bag for a few days, I close it completely. However, if you use sleep more often, you will have less to worry about that pesky startup time.
