Finally, don’t mess with parts of your e-bike that you don’t like. Some of these tips are simple things that anyone can do, while others are more technical and should only be attempted by people with a more in-depth understanding of bicycle electrical components such as motors, batteries and speed controllers. And remember, some of them can definitely void your warranty if your e-bike comes with one.
A battery that is in a higher state of charge has a higher voltage. The speed of a DC motor (like the one in your e-bike) depends entirely on the voltage. So higher voltages = higher speeds.
This means you’ll want to charge more often, perhaps after each trip, rather than bundling multiple trips together with the same charge. A good way to do this is to pick up a cheap charger to keep at work or wherever you go during the day. That way you can stay charged for the return trip.
Just remember that letting your battery sit fully charged for long periods of time (weeks or more) can be detrimental to its long-term health.

Since motor speed depends on voltage, using a higher voltage battery is the fastest way to increase your speed significantly. However, before you upgrade your 36V battery to 48V for example, you’ll want to check that your controller can handle the increased voltage (most can handle a slight overvoltage). If you are not comfortable checking the voltage rating of your controller (usually written on the capacitors), then contact the manufacturer. Don’t just change the battery without checking – you risk frying your controller if it can’t handle the higher voltage.
Also keep in mind that any battery meter you currently have will probably no longer read accurately unless you replace it with a new meter with the appropriate voltage.
Another way to increase speed is to use a motor that has a higher RPM rating for your particular voltage (known as the motor’s KV rating). This is especially easy for hub motors, which are often designed with multiple motor windings for different models.
You will simply want to get an engine that has a higher KV or RPM rating than your current engine. For example, if you have a 48V e-bike that goes about 20 mph (32 km/h), you can switch to this hub motor and reach speeds closer to 28-30 mph (45-48 km/ h).

Either learn to adjust your brakes yourself (it’s easy with an inexpensive bike multi-tool), or visit your local bike shop and have them do it for you.
I know it sounds crazy, but it really works. Adding a windshield to your electric bike can make a big impact on speed. I’ve seen it add 3 mph (5 km/h) to an already higher-speed e-bike, although it won’t have as dramatic an effect on lower-speed e-bikes that are less affected by drag.
A windshield can have such a big impact because it prevents your body from acting as a large canvas. Instead, it gently bends the air around you more efficiently.
You can find windshields designed for motorcycles that easily attach to the handlebars of a bicycle, or windshields designed for scooters that are less expensive but require a little modification to attach to the handlebars of a bicycle.

Go to the plate. This is easier than adding a windshield, but has a similar effect. By reducing your wind-catching cross-section, you’ll become more aerodynamic and increase your speed.
Granted, it’s not the most comfortable way to cover many miles, which makes this windshield suddenly a lot more appealing.
A cool battery is a happy battery. And a happy battery has less voltage drop, which is when the voltage drops under load. And as we’ve already learned, lower voltage equals lower speed.
So make sure your battery gets enough cooling air so it doesn’t get hotter than it should. Most e-bikes already have adequate cooling, but some that keep the battery hidden in a bag can have heat issues, which can take a bit off your top speed.
How Cycling Can Make You A Faster Runner
Depending on your e-bike, you may be able to hack it to remove speed limits and trick it into going faster.
This is usually done in two ways. The first is to change the e-bike’s display settings to tell it to have a smaller wheel size. Since the e-bike measures speed by counting the revolutions of the wheel, it will suddenly decide that it is moving slower and may remove the speed limit.
The second method is to look for a wired jumper to limit the speed of the controller. This is often a single cable connected together with an electrical connector that can be connected together to limit the speed to the EU-mandated 25 km/h (15.5 mph) or removed to allow a higher maximum speed for other countries. If your e-bike is designed to meet EU requirements, you may be able to find a jumper like this that can be switched off to remove the speed limiter.
