As PC hardware continues to accelerate, so does software, and the Windows operating system is no exception. This is especially true when it comes to startups. Once launched, there are other performance factors to consider. Even the latest version of Windows isn’t immune to slowdowns, and not everyone is ready to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Here are some tips to speed up Windows if you’re running version 10 or 11.

The problem with many articles that tell you how to speed up Windows is that they tell you to turn off more interesting features of the operating system, such as visual animation. Most of our tips show you ways to speed up your Windows system without compromising its appearance and performance. Most methods can be done for free, but some involve spending a little money on software or hardware. For those with older, underpowered cars that want to increase speed but don’t care for the extra goodies, here are some options to be found at the end of this list.
Here Are 10 Tips To Optimize Windows 10 For Gaming
Note that this is a “Speed up your computer!” Adds for registry cleaning, which often leads to malware. Microsoft does not support the use of Menu Cleaner (opens in a new window) for Windows 10.
But we do not suggest this as a guide, as everyone should do it regardless. Start by going to Settings > Windows Update regularly to see if there are security and reliability updates you want to install. Your computer may run faster after an update because it includes updated hardware drivers. Even if you don’t want big feature updates – you can delay those big updates in the same section of Settings.
There are third-party system cleanup utilities for Windows 10 that can speed up your PC, but these types of software aren’t as popular as they used to be. Most of these services improve your computer’s performance, but sometimes only by small amounts. There are a lot of malicious downloads that claim to speed up your computer, so stick with a tried and tested product. Iolo System Mechanics is a good choice, for example.
Although the situation is improving, the problem with some new computers is that they come with a lot of unnecessary software, sometimes called software, pop-up or PUP for unwanted programs. A few years ago, a Lenovo computer we tested had about 20 so-called utility programs that would occasionally pop up and interrupt what we were doing. Even Microsoft is not to blame in this game, as it already includes several games and mixed reality software on PC that you are not interested in.
How To Make Your Computer Faster
Right-click the desired application tile in startup and select Uninstall. Doing so will remove the program immediately. You can also click the Windows Start button icon and select the best options for programs and features. Or type programs in the search box next to the Start button.
Malware can usually be found by sorting through the list of installed applications named by your computer manufacturer. Another good option is to check for apps you don’t know you’ve installed recently. Or by size, get rid of very large items you don’t need. If you find unwanted junk, select them and click Remove. Unfortunately, you can remove one at a time. If there are a lot of streaming apps, set aside about half an hour for this project.
Do not forget to remove the cap from the program that you installed but do not want anymore – the software that came with the software.
Remember that Windows 10 and 11 have two types of apps: traditional desktop apps and the modern Microsoft Store (formerly Windows Store). You’ll see both on the Apps and Features pages of the Modern Settings app. For non-Store apps, the Control Panel opens, where you can uninstall old desktop apps. You can either sort by size, date installed or name, or search for a specific application.

One reason to uninstall apps is to help with performance, as many apps load processes when they start and take up a lot of RAM and CPU cycles. When you’re in the Programs and Features section of Control Panel, you can click Turn Windows features on or off and check the menu to see if there’s anything you’re not using. For more help on removal, read How to Remove Crapware from Your Computer.
As mentioned, many programs install additional processes that run every time you start your computer, some of which are not things you need to run regularly on your system. Compared to Windows 7, where you had to run the MSCONFIG utility, newer versions of Windows make it easier to disable startup from the updated Task Manager.
The easiest way to call the task manager is to press Ctrl-Shift-Esc. Switch to the Startup tab and you will see all the programs that are installed when Windows starts. The dialog even has a column showing the effect of each trigger. The Status column shows whether the program is running or not. To change this status, click on any item. It’s usually easier to see things you don’t want to run. For example, if you never use iTunes, you probably don’t need to run iTunesHelper all the time.
Type Disk Cleanup in the Start menu to open the trusted tool for multiple generations of Windows operating systems. Disk Cleanup finds unwanted junk on your computer, such as temporary files, offline websites, and installation files, and suggests deleting them all at once. You may even notice that your recycle bin is bloated, which usually has a significant impact on speed if your disk is full.

If you don’t schedule disk defragmentation regularly, include it in the Optimize Drive tool, which you can find by typing its name into the search box next to the Start button. Note that if your primary drive is an SSD, then you don’t need to bother with defragmentation because there are no moving parts to read the drive.
A newer way to save saves is to enable the Save Sense option (see image above). It automatically frees up space by removing temporary files and Recycle Bin items. For a full explanation of how to use this feature, see How to Free Up Hard Disk Space in Windows.
Both Windows 10 and 11 manage memory more efficiently than previous versions, but more memory still speeds up PC operations. If you still use a desktop tower, this article can show you how to add RAM. The websites of the major memory manufacturers (Crucial, Kingston, Corsair) all offer product trackers that show you what type of RAM your computer is using, and they are reasonably priced. You can get 8GB of high performance DDR4 RAM for less than $50.
If it’s $50 or more, and your computer is older, has a non-SSD drive (see below), and doesn’t have much memory, you can try ReadyBoost with a USB stick. It stores data in the memory of a portable storage device, which is slowed down by a rotating disk. Go to the USB key’s File Explorer category, right-click to open Properties, and switch to the ReadyBoost tab. For most modern systems, this feature is not available and does not provide a performance boost.
Ways To Speed Up Windows 10 And Windows 11
Adding RAM isn’t always an option, however, so not everyone can use this tip. That’s not possible with today’s Windows devices, such as the Surface Pro tablet. Gaming and business laptops often allow for RAM upgrades, but this is less common. Newer, thinner speakers and converters typically sport solid state memory.
Installing and running demanding programs like Adobe Photoshop happens faster with an SSD. Windows has a big benefit when SSD is booting. Microsoft Store apps can be easily moved from a spinning hard drive to an SSD from the Settings and app page.
To speed up your system, it makes sense to replace your internal boot drive, which may also be an option if you use a laptop. But with a USB 3.0 connection, an external SSD can also speed up storage-intensive applications. Check out our list of the best SSDs to help you decide which device to install.
You can run this with Windows Defender or third-party applications, but your best bet is Neil Rubenking’s anti-malware program from top security analyst. Don’t forget to use continuous anti-malware protection as well. Some AV products include A
