Kia Jeffers was excited to start a new fitness program in March 2020: She signed up for a nine-week Beachbody class taught by trainer Autumn Calabrese.

She arranged to help her two children get to school on time so she could be at the gym early in the morning and committed to working out five days a week throughout the program.

“I put on a lot of weight when I finished my postdoc and hit the job market, and at that time my commitment to yoga and other activities waned a bit. I was eating really unhealthy. I weighed too much. I didn’t like the way I looked, I felt uncomfortable in your own skin,” Jeffers, 46, told Health magazine; she weighed 197 pounds when she started the program. “I was like, I need help. This is a program that’s all about getting me healthy, and I was willing to make that a priority.”

She was excited to start the course, but things quickly changed when the coronavirus pandemic hit the country, closing gyms and canceling classes. Jeffers has been hit harder than most: She’s a nurse who has spent much of the pandemic doing COVID-related work with underserved populations in community settings.

However, a virtual version of the course soon became possible, and soon Jeffers was running the course at 11 p.m. after the end of the shift at work.

“I started the program right when COVID became a big thing, and everything around me was like chaos, with my kids transitioning to virtual school and transitioning to work, and that was the only thing I could control,” Jeffers said.

Jeffers said the home workout was even better than the studio class because she was able to let go of the day’s stress before bed. Thirty-minute daily sessions include density training, tabata workouts, and other ever-changing regimens.

“You don’t just do one move over and over again,” Jeffers said. “…It’s full-body, you sweat for two minutes, and working with Autumn (Calabrese) is really motivating because she’s like the Energy Bunny. I love the variety, the intensity, and the result. I felt like I wasn’t there. I not only was I throwing weight, but I was stronger and had more endurance.

Jeffers enjoyed the nine-week program so much that she did it two more times after completing the first round. She lost 39.6 pounds in just 27 weeks, which she credits to both the regimen itself and her renewed healthy eating habits.

Jeffers said one of her favorite parts of repeating the program was that previously difficult exercises became easier.

“You see how you progress week by week,” she said. “You see that you can do more reps or lift heavier weights as you go. . . . In addition to losing weight, you see your progress.”

Jeffers said she would advise others looking to lose weight to try to find a similarly structured program to help them stay on track.

“A structured program is good because you don’t have to think ‘Oh, it’s leg day, it’s abs day, am I doing the right amount of reps with the right amount of weight?’ It’s important to start with zero considerations as much as possible,” she said.

The program also allowed her to connect with others who were on the same regimen, which she says is another thing people should look for.

“Connecting with other people who are committed to weight loss or fitness or mental health and wellness is less isolating and can be a source of motivation,” said Jeffers, who added that she and her friends communicate via Zoom during the walks. “…As exhausting as the workouts are, working out with someone who motivates you and knows you’re connecting with other people is their own support system.”

Carrie Breen is a reporter and associate editor covering health, pop culture and more. He has a master’s degree in journalism from New York University. When my father passed away in late 2018 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, I was forced to rethink my health and lifestyle. I was in my 40s and really struggling. I slept badly, with pain in my back; I felt bloated all the time. The problems seemed to get worse even after I tried chiropractic adjustments, probiotics and even a new mattress.

As a professional pilot, I was constantly on the go trying to find any available food. I didn’t want to believe I was overweight and out of shape, but years of unhealthy eating and inconsistent exercise had me tipping the scales at 205 pounds on a 5’10” frame. The constant tiredness and lethargy also affected me mentally and emotionally.

I decided to get back into the gym, but once I got there, I found that my old routine—from high school—was stale and lacked ambition. I started searching online, which of course brought up hundreds of options. I found Jeremy Ethier’s videos to be professional and science-based, without much hype. I decided to try his comprehensive program because I wanted a concrete plan that I could implement. I wanted goals and a clear path to achieve them.

A Realistic Diet And Workout Plan Helped Me Lose 40 Pounds

To make it work, I needed a gym membership that I could use anywhere; I work six days a week. The first two to three months almost destroyed me – I’m not 18 anymore, but I soon acclimatised. The hardest challenge was changing the menu. The calorie counter and nutrition guide showed me how many calories I was getting from snacking throughout the day and helped me switch to nutrient-dense, lower-calorie foods. My goal was to make every calorie count while maintaining a calorie deficit every day.

It was a slow, deliberate process and I had a few setbacks along the way. Shoulder surgery meant four to six weeks of recovery during which I did my best to keep up with exercise. In just one year, I went from 205 pounds at about 26 percent body fat to 168 pounds at 10.5 percent body fat. I didn’t focus on losing weight, I focused on reducing my body fat percentage and I got exactly where I wanted to be.

I haven’t felt this good since my 20s. My outlook and eating habits changed forever; I have come to love and enjoy the healthier foods I eat today. I also learned to love the gym again and appreciate the work I put into being mobile and flexible. I love the way my clothes fit; I’m pushing 50, I’m not ashamed of the way I look.

The biggest change for me was setting a goal, committing to a plan, and then following through. To anyone who wants to start, I say find something
