“I was very upset. … My mental health was very bad, my physical health was very dangerous.” Sako said. He graduated a year ago with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and criminal justice and was working at his first job out of college.

“I struggled with disordered eating for eight years,” Sacco said. In college, he said, he began abusing prescription amphetamines to lose weight, leading to a habit of not eating during the day. After he stopped taking drugs, he started eating more.

During her freshman year of college, Sacco said she gained “a lot of weight” and struggled with dieting and negative thoughts about her self-worth. “I knew I wanted to be healthy so I could have energy throughout the day, feel confident and do the right things for my body,” she recalled.

One day in July 2020, Sacco decided a change was needed. “I will handle it myself and teach my sisters,” said Sacco, one of six children. “So I started learning habits, and it completely changed my world.”

Sacco says he was always interested in behavioral science and began reading every book he could find on habit formation. He said: “I basically completely changed my mind. He started with small changes to change the way I ate.

“What I learned from researching habits is that for someone to make really lasting changes…it has to be something that’s easy to do. So I looked at my own life and found the real things. Noticed,” Sacco explained.

“If you’re eating healthy most of the time, that’s over the 50% line, you’re eating healthy,” Sacco said of the mindset he adapts to. He knew he wouldn’t miss family dinners, pizza parties, and booze with his roommates. “But I can eat 60% to 80% healthy food every week, while doing the things I love, treating my disordered eating and not restricting myself,” she said.

In a viral TikTok, Sacco shares two ways to ensure that 60% to 80% (about 13 to 17) of her weekly meals are healthy.

“I know I can keep breakfast that way,” Sacco said. Said Sacco, because he often asks for lunch or dinner. So he plans what to have for breakfast each week, like eggs or avocado, and sticks to it every day.

Eating a nutritious breakfast every day is the driving force behind Sacco’s health and fitness journey.

“If I eat seven healthy meals in the morning, I’m already in a good place,” she said. He adds that eating the same healthy meal every day of the week—whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner—makes a big difference in hitting the 60% to 80% mark.

Sacco’s second strategy is to prepare two healthy two-serving meals each week, adding four healthy meals for a total of 11.

“I’ve made a little habit that I do in the morning, so when I eat breakfast, I make something,” Sacco said. Whether it’s chicken and vegetables or salmon and rice, Sacco said she always makes two servings, so she can eat one for lunch and dinner or the next day.

Sacco often tosses roasted vegetables and a piece of salmon into the oven to get 13 healthy meals per week. By Shelby Sacco.

When Sacco tried to develop this habit, he realized how easy it was to prepare. “I put salmon and vegetables in the oven and it takes two minutes,” Sacco said. Another tip: Choose foods that can be easily reheated or added to a salad the next day and keep them ready. Food is easily accessible.

With these two strategies, “I’m already eating 11 healthy meals a week, so that’s two more to get between 60% and 80%,” Sacco said.

Why Losing Weight Too Quickly May Backfire In The Long Run

To get there, she usually cooks another meal with two servings or chooses two more meals for a healthy meal.

On Sunday, she makes a grocery list with all the ingredients and snacks she wants to make that week. “I try to make sure I have healthy options in the fridge … and I have options that I can eat.” Sacco said, adding that he usually eats a mix of vegetables, protein and carbohydrates. He also learned proper portion sizes for meals to avoid counting calories.

In addition to food, Sacco keeps healthy snacks on hand, such as sliced peppers or grapes, and leaves them as visual cues to remind himself to refuel between meals.

Small, steady changes in the sacco add up over the long term. “I’ve successfully closed it for the last year and a half without any problems because the changes are … consistent,” he said.

The Flex Diet

According to Sacco, he used the same method to create habits around exercise. He started with walking, but eventually realized that he liked strength training, which he has been doing continuously since last year. But it took a lot of trial and error to figure out what he liked.

“I believe that if you do something you don’t like, you will never fail. … You really learn what works for you,” he said.

“I was so cruel to myself. Sacco recalled that I would look in the mirror and just isolate myself. Instead, she “made a habit of saying something positive” to herself and wrote affirmations every day.

Self-love also helps Sacco be kinder to herself when she’s off work, which happened last December when she was sick with COVID-19 for several weeks. “I love myself, I give myself grace … that’s right,” Sacco said.

Sacco started sharing her journey on Instagram in 2020, but in January of this year, she started making TikTok videos about the power of habit to change your life. He now has nearly 437,000 followers on TikTok. “I like to talk about habits. It’s like my goal and my passion,” he said.

Sacco recently quit her full-time job to focus on TikTok, and says she’s certified as a nutritionist, personal trainer and behavior change specialist to teach and train others.
