How To Know If Your Fertile Or Not – By Laura García de Miguel M.D., M.Sc. (gynecologist), Mónica Aura Masip M.D., M.Sc. (gynecologist), Silvia Azaña Gutiérrez B.Sc., M.Sc. (embryologist) and Cristina Algarra Goosman B.Sc., M.Sc. (psychologist).
Female fertility signs are indicators that help us determine when ovulation occurs. Identifying when a woman ovulates becomes important when she is looking for pregnancy, because the days after it are more likely that the egg and sperm will meet and fertilization will occur. These days are therefore the most fertile days of the woman.
How To Know If Your Fertile Or Not
In a regular menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs 14 days after the start of the last menstruation. Based on this, there are calendars that allow you to calculate the most fertile days to try to get pregnant. However, menstrual cycles are not always regular, so the time of ovulation can vary from one cycle to another even in the same woman. Therefore, learning to recognize these other signs of female fertility can be very helpful.

However, it is highly recommended not to be obsessed with planning sex only on these most fertile days. Such planning and control can cause stress, which, contrary to what is desired, can be counter-productive in your search for pregnancy.
Below is an index with the 9 points we will elaborate on in this article.
Cervical engorgement is one of the indicators that let us know when a woman is in her menstrual cycle. This is a discharge from the cervix that is scanty, opaque and viscous during the pre- and post-ovulation period.
However, when ovulation occurs (and due to the action of estrogens), the cervical mucus becomes more abundant, transparent, elastic, thin (it can be stretched between the fingers about 10 cm). Therefore, it is common to say that the cervical mucus looks like raw egg whites when the ovulation period is approaching. In addition, the woman may notice a sensation of moisture.
When Are You The Most Fertile?
Due to the characteristics acquired by the cervix at the time of ovulation, it is easier for the sperm to ascend into the uterus. In contrast, the properties of the uterus during the rest of the menstrual cycle create a barrier and hinder the movement of sperm.
Therefore, knowing how to recognize the appearance of the cervix during the period of ovulation allows a woman to estimate her most fertile days.
The position of the cervix can also be an indicator of a woman’s fertility. In the first half of the menstrual cycle, before ovulation, the cervix is tight, closed, dry and relatively low. After ovulation, the cervix softens, opens and rises, facilitating the passage of sperm. Within a few days, the cervix tightens and closes again.
These changes of the cervix can be self-assessed by palpation, after careful hand washing, to determine the days after ovulation.
A Closer Look At Male Infertility
The basal temperature in women varies throughout the menstrual cycle. When ovulation occurs, a woman’s temperature is usually 0.5 degrees higher than normal due to increased levels of progesterone.
For this reason, it is possible to determine if a woman is ovulating by taking a daily basal temperature measurement to detect such an increase. To implement this method correctly, the following recommendations can be useful:
The main disadvantage of this method is that it detects ovulation a posteriori, ie when it has already occurred and can be inaccurate.
In a normal menstrual cycle, there is a sharp increase in luteinizing hormone (LH) levels in the woman about 36 hours before ovulation. Based on this, there are now methods that can be used at home to detect the hormone LH in the urine and therefore estimate when ovulation occurs and know the most fertile days.
Are You Fertile After Your Period?
The main advantage of this type of LH hormone test is that it detects the time of ovulation before it occurs, so it can be very useful if you are planning a pregnancy.
In addition to all of the above, there may be other more subtle signs that a woman is in her most fertile days. For example, women often experience an increase in libido when they are in their most fertile days.
However, there are also women who suffer from certain types of pain due to the ovulation process itself, so they are also able to recognize when ovulation occurs.
The only way to be sure that a woman is fertile is the pregnancy itself. Today we have various tests that tell us that there is a problem. Some allow us to conclude that pregnancy does not occur naturally.
Fertility Labs, Explained: What Your Fertility Test Results Mean
Today there are several factors that allow us to estimate whether it will be more or less likely, because many of them make pregnancy difficult, but not completely impossible. Among the most important ones are: age, especially the women (the older the woman, the less quality eggs); Ovarian factors (ovarian reserves in progress); metabolic factors (thyroid disorders, increased prolactin, diabetes, obesity, toxic habits, etc.); Coagulation disorders (which prevent implantation or proper growth of the embryo); anatomical factors, genetic factors and immunological factors.
Trials usually only start 12 months after the search. But in cases of women over 35 years of age, known genetic diseases, irregular menstruation, miscarriage, previous pelvic surgery or men with genital pathology, it should be started as soon as possible, so as not to delay the treatment if necessary.
There are certain signs that suggest that a woman is not fertile. The first sign is when we have irregular periods or no periods at all. In this case, it is very important to go to the gynecologist to evaluate the cause of the irregular cycles, and to discuss the possible impact on fertility, to see if it is advisable, for example, to freeze an egg.
There may also be other symptoms such as very painful periods, dysmenorrhea, associated with endometriosis. In the case of patients with endometriosis, regular check-ups with a gynecologist are necessary to evaluate possible treatments and evaluate the ovarian reserve.
Can You Get Pregnant When Not Ovulating?
In addition, in women who have undergone pelvic surgery, or who have fibroids, it is necessary to consult the possible impact of these processes on future fertility.
On the other hand, in patients with endocrine disorders such as overweight or obesity, thyroid disorders, it is highly recommended to talk to the specialist to evaluate possible hormonal changes that affect the chance of pregnancy.
Finally, those patients with very marked hirsutism or acne may also be associated with ovarian hormone changes that reduce fertility.
However, if you are trying to conceive, it is recommended to have intercourse about 2 days apart. Greater or lesser abstinence may affect basic quality.
How To Check Cervical Mucus (discharge) To Detect Ovulation
The best thing to do to check if there is a fertility problem is to see a specialist who will determine the necessary fertility tests you should have. Above all, you should see a specialist after 1 year of unprotected intercourse without achieving pregnancy (or 6 months if you are older than 35 years).
There are methods such as basal temperature measurement and evaluation of the cervix and cervix that can help determine a woman’s most fertile days. However, identifying these days does not imply that there is no fertility problem preventing or hindering pregnancy.
A specialist arranges tests that assess female fertility. However, there are tests you can do at home to identify the time of ovulation and therefore the most fertile period of a woman’s menstrual cycle (but that doesn’t mean there isn’t an underlying fertility problem).
Some of these tests are: detecting an increase in basal temperature, evaluating the cervix and detecting the position of the cervix and the LH hormone.
