Fabric Care: Zap Pit Stains
Start by filling the sink with warm water and vinegar. I didn’t want to run the sink too far, so I put the sink in a large bowl, which worked just as well. Soak the garment in water/vinegar for 20-30 minutes.
While the clothes are soaking, combine the remaining ingredients to make a paste. This was actually more than I needed so I used some of the residue to clean the stainless steel sink – it worked great!
Once the soak time is up, wring out the garment until completely soaked, then use your peroxide/salt/soda cream and brush it into the hole stain with a toothbrush.
I dry the shirt for a long time, then throw the shirt in the washer for a normal cycle.

I’ve never liked my hands, or my kitchen, to smell like vinegar. I gave it my previous “college try” but the solution didn’t work for my pit. It makes the jersey better…not enough, especially with all the hard work! I definitely don’t like how long the process took. Here is the result:
It made more sense to me when I found this method online. Dish soap…soap is always good and I pulled out my favorite brand in case my pits were greasy too. Peroxide…a natural bleach. I mean, in the last summer of the 80s, she bleached my hair pretty well, right? And baking soda…a gentle, natural exfoliator that cleans up everything else with ease, so why not splash on your blemishes?
I found the basic theory of this online, but it doesn’t really lay out the “how”, so I’ll tell you what I did. It makes sense to me to start with soap. I started by painting a lot over the entire area of the hole in the shirt. Next, I sprinkled a good amount of baking soda on the surface—enough for me to make a thick paste with those two ingredients and my toothbrush—and massaged it in lightly. Then I add the peroxide and let it sit for a few minutes, hoping the air bubbles it creates will help loosen the yellow stain and remove it from the fabric. Finally, I toss the shirt in the washing machine for a normal wash.
While I found this method more fun, easier, and less smelly than the first method, it didn’t quite solve my actual dilemma about having pitted shirts. Again, as with the first experience, the shirt was definitely better, but not without stains. I also like this better because I have more control over the ingredients I use, so it doesn’t seem so wasteful, but unfortunately, it’s not a winner. Here is my result:
How To Remove Yellow Sweat Stains From White Shirts — The Mensch
I wish Oxi Clean was something you already had in your cleaning cabinet – about a year ago I discovered OxiClean White Revive, my new favorite laundry additive. I’m a little weird when it comes to laundry smelling good, and this definitely does for me!
So yes, I realize now that I sounded a bit disingenuous, because at the beginning of this article, I said I didn’t want to get paid for using ads and sponsored cleaning supplies. Suffice it to say that this review is not sponsored, but since this is the only solution that actually works for my hated yellow pit stained shirts, I’d love to be a paid speaker – lol. I’m happy to share my honest, unsolicited opinion.
This is the easiest way I’ve come across. I just dissolve a scoop of Oxi Clean in water.
Again, I didn’t want to tie down my kitchen sink for long periods of time, so I used a large kitchen bowl and used room temperature tap water. After the OxiClean dissolves, I put the shirt down to soak. After about half an hour, I doubled up by applying a small amount of OxiClean to my toothbrush, rubbing it directly onto the pore stain, and returning it to the bowl to continue soaking.

Because the sweat stain on my shirt was so deep (I know…uh, gross, but what would a girl do?!) and because I really like my shirt, I soaked it overnight and threw it all away Going In – The water, OxiClean, and shirt go into the washing machine wash cycle. normal.
Yes – I was pleasantly surprised with the results and my entire shirt looked sparkly after the soak and smelled so fresh too!
I hate to say it, but just because I look like an ad, that’s not my intention. OxiClean White Revive is the easiest, most time-saving, least-used product…and it works the best! I can live with my favorite white shirts for a long time, and as mentioned, my shirts smell great – yes!
I will say that none of the methods you used got my shirt back to “like new” condition, but that’s to be expected. Another disclaimer – I had planned on trying bleach products (remaining anonymous), but when it comes to my favorite shirts, I have two concerns about bleaching.

First, the bleach will usually attack the cotton and cause pinholes. I may have used it too much, but that’s my past experience and I don’t want to leave holes and stains in my pits.
Second, bleach is recommended for stain removal and hot water is recommended, but I can’t help but think of another laundry habit my mother instilled in me – never wash a stain in hot water; no hot water, no hot dryer, The heat will set the stain. For these two reasons, I’ve never tried bleach.
In the end, I was so pleased with the results I got from OxiClean that I rummaged through my closets and drawers for a private all-white soak session. I also look forward to not having to buy so many new shirts in the future!
