Then go out and get three more jobs because your electric bill is going to be ridiculous.

So while it’s ideal, it’s not practical, or even entirely necessary. The key is to understand the purpose of your pool pump, what type of pump you have (or may have), and how to best utilize its features.

If the water in your pool wasn’t moving, it would quickly turn into a stagnant swamp, harboring algae and all sorts of other nasty things. One of the most important factors in keeping your pool clean and swimming is pool circulation. This is produced by the pump, which is the first element of your pool’s filtration system.

The pool pump draws in the water and then pushes it out through the filter. No matter what kind of filter you have, it will only work if it passes through the water. This is how the filter can trap debris and bacteria.

First, if you don’t know it, you will need to calculate the size of your pool. If you don’t know how to do this, you can use our pool calculator:

The Quick Guide To Your Pool Pump

Once you have the size of your pool, divide it by eight to determine the number of gallons per hour (GPH) that should be pumped.

Most pool pumps go in gallons per minute, not GPH. So, to get this number, divide the GPH by 60 to determine how many gallons per minute (GPM) must be pumped for full circulation.

Once you get all the numbers, this part is easy. Just find one that pumps at least the same GPM as your pool requires. If one of you chooses a little more pump than you need, that’s fine. Just don’t go below the required GPM.

This will ensure that your pump is running at the proper speed to circulate the water in your pool for eight hours.

Enable it. Of course, you need to run it for at least eight hours. But are those consecutive hours? during the day? At night? So what is the point here?

Do you know the rate you pay to switch electricity during the day? This is based on what the electricity supplier says

Peak hours vary from location to location. For example, warmer climates tend to have more peak hours when people turn on the air conditioner, perhaps in the afternoon or evening when people come home from work and turn on the air conditioner.

It might seem logical to run the pump when people are swimming during the day, so the water stays clean. And that’s a good point. But let’s look at a few more things.

Your utility’s off-peak hours may be at night, especially if you live in a hot climate, where people may run their air conditioners during the day.

Also, running the pump is usually necessary after adding chemicals to the pool. In order for chemicals to spread through the water, it needs to move. Otherwise, you’re likely to end up with over-cleaned spots and pockets of dirty water, and that’s not the kind of Marco Polo you want to play.

Do I Need To Run My Pool Pump Every Day?

But there is one chemical that should be added at night, or at least after dusk: pool shock. If you add it during the day, the sun will burn off most of it, reducing its effectiveness.

So when you shock your pool, you definitely want to run your pump overnight, and at least eight hours to fully distribute the shock.

DryTec’s fast-acting, fast-dissolving pool shocks kill bacteria, control algae and remove organic contaminants from pools. It comes in easy to use 1 pound bags.

Yes, you want to run your pool pump for at least eight hours each day to complete at least one circulation cycle. But that doesn’t mean it has to be eight hours straight.

Again, refer to these not very useful hours. You can work around these and run your pump for two hours here, seven hours there, then three hours. As long as it runs for at least 8 hours in each 24-hour period, you’re covered.

This pool pump has a really simple digital control panel with 3 programmable speeds. And it’s very quiet thanks to the enclosed fan-cooled motor (TEFC).

How Long Does My Heat Pump Have To Run Every Day?

In addition to daylight hours and off-peak hours, how long you can run your pool pump depends on the type of pump you have.

It’s only logical, but it might be something you don’t think about. The more powerful your pool pump, the more horsepower it has, the faster it circulates the water, meaning you can run it less frequently and for shorter periods of time.

But it depends on the size of your filter and the piping of the filter system. A very powerful pump may be too much for a small filter. Also, one power pump runs slower, but if your system uses three-inch tubing, it can accommodate three power pumps that run faster.

. If you have a small pool, three horsepower may be too much and it will waste energy and cost more money. Be sure to find a pump that isn’t too powerful for your filtration system, but will turn your pool volume at an adequate rate to hit the magic GPM number you need.

Double speed. You will have a more efficient and faster turnover. If you are going to buy a new pump, we recommend that you get double the speed or better. In addition to saving energy and improving efficiency, some states, such as California and Arizona, prohibit the installation of new single-speed pool pumps.

But to really get the most out of your investment, we recommend that you opt for a variable speed pool pump. They use less energy, circulation and filtration are faster, and you can get utility discounts for using them. They also operate at lower revolutions per minute (RPM) than single and dual speed pumps, so they are quieter.

For larger inground pools requiring a 3 horsepower motor. Integrated control panel with 8 programmable speeds and timer. Best for pool owners who want to save money on energy.
