How Often Should A Pool Pump Run – During the summer, when your pool is used more, the pool filter and pump need to run longer. But when is the right time to clean a busy pool and keep it clean?
Regular pump operation is part of regular Austin pool maintenance. The pump is the heart of your pool’s circulation system, cleaning debris and properly mixing chemicals to maintain sanitary pool water. How often you use your pool filter and pump will depend on several factors, such as:
How Often Should A Pool Pump Run
This calculation can be used as a general guideline to determine how long you should run the pump for proper pool maintenance in San Antonio:
How Long Does My Heat Pump Have To Run Every Day?
So let’s say you have a 20,000 gallon pool and a filtration rate of 3,000 gallons per hour. Your equation will look like this:
(20,000/3000) x 2 = 13,333 or 13 hours and 20 minutes in a 24 hour period
Again, this equation is meant to give you a general idea of how to clean your pool and keep it clean during the summer months. The size and type of pump you have can also play a big role in how long you run the pump (as well as operating costs). A small, high-efficiency pump will allow you to run the pump in one-third to one-half the time of a larger, older pump. Take care of your water and be sure to test it often to make sure it stays clean and healthy.

How long should my pool pump run? A question I get asked almost daily during the summer. The answers I give are usually short and simple, but there are also more detailed ones. I will provide both here.
As a general rule of thumb, if your above ground pool comes with the right size equipment, you should run the pump for about eight hours a day during the summer months.
Tips For Maintaining An Above Ground Pool
When I’m in the yard, I just finished installing the above ground pool, and now I’m going over the pump and filter operations, I rarely explain in detail how long the pump should run. I just tell them to run it eight hours a day during the summer months and bring it back when it starts to cool off.
It is not my intention to complicate matters in this article. Instead, I want you to stop thinking about your pool and get out and start enjoying it. The turnover rate can be helpful in understanding what this means.
The circulation rate is how long it takes your pool pump to move all the gallons of water it has.
So you have a pump in your above ground pool. And that pump takes the water from the pool and returns it to the pool through the filter.

Now your pool pump is sucking in and sending out several gallons of water per minute. Most pool pumps in the country will move between 40 and 50 gallons of pool water per minute. This means that if the pump runs for one hour, it will pump between 2400 and 3000 liters of water from the pool.
If you have a 24′ round above ground pool (the most common size), it will hold about fourteen thousand gallons of water. So if your pump moves 2400 gallons of water per hour, it will take about six hours to pour 14 thousand gallons through it. Then six hours is the turnover of your pool.
The pool industry requires that your pool pump move at least as many gallons as your pool at least once every 24 hours. This means that if your above ground pool equipment is sized correctly for the pool, as in the example above, it will pump as many gallons as the pool holds in about six hours.
So if you run your pool pump (higher if it’s two speeds) for about eight hours a day, you’re better off.

Running the pool pump at low speed 24 hours a day versus 8 hours a day at high speed
In-ground pool pumps have become extremely complex. Most of the newer ones now are multi-speed pumps that will run at different rates throughout the day. Personally, I think it’s all a bunch of contrived nonsense that only increases the cost of products and does not save money on energy.
Above ground pools are much cheaper, so luckily we haven’t been hit with the brilliant idea of a multi-speed pump yet.
However, some above ground pool pumps come with two speeds. And as an alternative, some will run their pump at low speed continuously (24 hours a day).
How To Troubleshoot A Pool Pump That Is Not Full Of Water
1 It needs a timer – Well, it doesn’t need a timer, but if you don’t have one, you’ll have to go out and turn it on in the morning and then manually turn it off every afternoon. This is only good if you don’t have much or are retired and stay at home every day.
Also if you are going on vacation it would be really nice to have a timer that turns the pump on/off while you are gone
Timers come with all in-ground pools, but not above-ground pools. If you are in the planning stages or have just got a new pool, consider whether you will need an automatic timer.
2 Makes more noise – A pump that runs faster will make more noise than a slower speed.

3 Pool water moves faster which makes it healthier – the faster the water moves, the harder it is on the things in it. This is why if you’re out in the woods, you’ll naturally prefer to drink from a fast-moving river as opposed to a slow-moving stream. The faster the water moves, the greater the presence of oxygen. And things do not live well in the presence of oxygen.
3 Helps create a swirling effect – with the shape above the ground, you can direct the return jet to send water back into the pool parallel to the wall. This will create an eddy and send most of the debris in the pool to the center of the bottom of the pool. This will only be achieved by running the pump at high speed. This can make it easier to keep the pool clean.
The warmer the water, the easier and more likely things will want to grow and reproduce. This also works the other way around. The colder the water, the less likely things are to grow or thrive. This is why you have to use so much chlorine and other chemicals in the heat of summer.
In terms of how long you have to run the pool pump, this means you can run it less when the pool water is cold. It won’t need to be moved or filtered as much.

I live in Central Florida. We never close the pools for the winter and the swimming season is long. Regardless of where you live or whether you are closing your pool for the winter, you can reduce your pumping time at the beginning and end of the pool season depending on the outside temperature.
This is for those who want to save energy. You don’t have to cut filter hours if you don’t want to. It won’t hurt anything. However, you can reduce your pool pump from eight to six hours a day and save about 50 cents a day on average.
This can add up to about $15 per month in the off months. Not a ton of savings or anything, but still a savings.
Before getting a pool, many people don’t think about what the water temperature will be or how they will like it. Most think their pool is refreshing or therapeutic or whatever…

A decent quality metal in-ground pool should last an average of ten to twenty years. However, the pool liner will not last as long and will need to be replaced.
