How Much Should Dogs Eat?
This piece will help you calculate the amount of raw food for your dog (or you can skip the gaffe and use our free online calculator!!).
The amount of food that an adult dog needs is different from that of puppies. A healthy adult dog on a “normal calorie” diet of fresh meat needs 2% to 2.5% of its body weight per day, the average puppy consumes much more.
For example, an 8kg adult Westie will need around 200g of fresh dog food per day (1% of 8kg is 80g x 2.5 = 200g).
Start with the average percentage you work with and increase or decrease the amount based on your dog’s needs. Factors that affect how much you eat include: age, race, activity level, weight goals (weight gain or loss), raw foods (homemade or commercial raw foods), health issues, etc.

Always remember, from puppy to adult, we want lean dogs. Think marathon runner (rather than 100m sprinter…) because they are long distance machines. Every gram of body fat is inflammatory. If they stay lean, they will live longer. Learn more about obesity in dogs here.
Puppies need more food than adult dogs for their rapidly growing bodies, and they have an important growth spurt to keep in mind.
If they leave food, don’t worry. If you are looking for more, this shows growth, like children.
An 8-week-old puppy consumes 10% of its body weight per day.

By the time they reach 50% of their adult weight (about 6 feet in a knee-high dog, earlier for toys, much later for giants, and up to 2 years of age), they will likely consume about 5% of their body weight each day. From there we aim to lose about 3% of their body weight by the time they reach full body size (about 12m for a dog at knee height).
Puppies can be ground, boneless raw dog food. They will love it. As soon as those little teeth come through, they’ll appreciate the nice meaty bone to chew on, which encourages natural behavior and may even stop them from chewing on your furniture and shoes! By 4-5 weeks they will eat normal raw dog food (depending on the amount of grind), although some prefer to use higher fat mixes for small puppies, this is their energy intake.
For adults, we always recommend splitting your total raw food intake into two meals: breakfast and dinner. However, the information continues. We know that
The healthier the animal, the more the intestines are used, in accordance with the best principles of fasting, we have begun to recommend these two meals closer together, giving the intestine a lot of rest (more information on fasting here).
What To Do When Your Puppy Swallows A Foreign Object
Now, apparently, dogs can be healthy in one meal a day. In fact, studies show that dogs live longer when they are fed once a day. However, I would add that this study was given to dogs with commercial food, many of which I consider to be food poisoning, so cutting down a lot of carbs, turning on insulin, or anything is better.
These instructions are different for puppies. They eat so much, it has to be spread between meals or they will explode! Babies aged 4-12 weeks should be fed about 4 times a day. We reduce it to about 3 times a day from 12-24 weeks and to two meals by half a year until adulthood.
No dog is the same, and many factors play an important role in determining the right amount of food your dog needs per day. Age is one as above. But so does body size and activity level.
If your dog is small, feed a little less or choose leaner meats. If your dog is active, feed a little more or switch to mixed fats for a while.

A lean meat mixture provides fewer calories per pound than a fat mixture. Therefore, when calculating how much raw food a given dog needs, it is better to measure ME (kcal/kg). ME is metabolizable energy. (That’s more specific than most pet owners need, but I’m targeting other vets and vet students here.)
After calculating your dog’s RER, you can use these multipliers based on your dog’s physical condition. But keep in mind that two dogs of the same sex, same litter, same lifestyle can still have up to 20% difference in their ME requirements.
