Although many of us talk about drinking “enough” water, what does that mean? What are the benefits of drinking water? Is it as important as most of us think it is? Let’s find out.
I want to make it clear that drinking coffee, smoothies, milkshakes, etc. it doesn’t count when it comes to how much water you get each day. The water in these drinks is only used to get the right consistency and final product. Don’t mix coffee beans with hot water because you really want to get that water into your body. You only mix because that’s how you get the consistency of coffee. As you can see from the coffee example, even processes outside our bodies rely heavily on water to make things work. This is the importance of water for our daily life.

There are many benefits when it comes to drinking water. There is a reason our body is made up of 50-60% water. There is a reason why there is no other source of hydration in the body like water. There’s a reason why we feel dehydrated if we don’t drink enough.
How Much Water Should I Drink Each Day?
Our bodies are made up of 50-60% water because our bodies rely heavily on it to direct/initiate/complete many processes that occur within our bodies. It needs all that water to function properly. The reason water hydrates our bodies like no other liquid is because our bodies don’t retain other water in this way. Let’s take cola as an example, our body doesn’t retain the liquid that is the cola, instead it takes the sugar and all the other nutrients that make up the cola and discards the others that aren’t useful anyway. Wheat water is used in its entirety. Our muscle cells, brain, lungs, heart, etc. contain a large amount of water. It makes sense if we can’t fuel our body throughout the day that we start to feel tired / lethargic / sleepy / unmotivated / exhausted (dehydrated). It’s because every major part of your body is fighting for the same amount of water you consume each day. Those parts of the body fight for water when there is not enough water for each part of the body to share equally, so those parts of the body cannot do their work/functions. This is where the cramps come from.
However, just drinking water is not enough. Your body must also be able to store this water to be effective. Everyone knows that salt can contain water. There is a build up of salt in our body/blood which helps to retain our water for us. We lose some of this salt in sweat/pee, but we need this level of salt in our blood to help us retain water. This is why adding salt to food/water is good for your health, especially in the heat and humidity that will make you sweat a lot. This is also why many people suffer from dehydration when it’s hot/humid outside.
Apart from the reasons I mentioned above, here is a list with more benefits when it comes to drinking water every day.
I find it impossible to answer this question easily. All I can do is give you the tools to discover yourself and your lifestyle. Everyone is different and this is no exception when it comes to our water intake. Everyone has different needs, our day-to-day life is different, and all of this adds up to different needs in terms of nutrition and in this case hydration.
How Much Water Is Too Much? Signs And Symptoms Of Water Intoxication
Drinking enough water means supporting everything you do during the day. If at any point in the day you feel dehydrated, tired, unmotivated it means we are not doing a good enough job of supporting muscle, brain and joint function by providing adequate hydration. As we have established before, there is a direct relationship between hydration and performance, our bodies need it to get things done over time.
A simple guide to drinking water starts with making sure you have water close to you wherever you are. They are more likely to drink water when it is nearby because it is easy and accessible. When you feel thirsty or have a dry mouth, it’s already too late and this is a sign that you need to drink water regularly or replace the other drinks you drink throughout the day with water. Another way to check the water level is by checking the pee, the pee is a very good source of information that shows us what is happening inside our body. If your toilet is clear like water is a sign of overhydration, if your ring is dark yellow it means you are not hydrated enough or your sugar level is too high, if your urine looks like coke you should see a doctor.
My recommendation to everyone is to strive for 2.5 liters a day, no matter what your life is like. If you get close to that number you’re probably fine no matter what you do throughout the day, if you go over it you can figure it out and adjust for the next day from there.
You will find that your needs are not always the same due to energy consumption, climate change and lifestyle changes.
