What Is Intermittent Fasting And Does It Really Work?
To answer these questions and get real perspective, we reached out to the Intermittent Fasting community on Facebook, as well as Intermittent Fasters on Instagram and Reddit. With over 800 people successfully completing the 21 Day Intermittent Fasting Challenge, we have some great examples to share!
We interviewed over 30 people (men and women) to find out what Intermittent Fasting results they experienced and summarized the findings below in this blog.
Many diets promise quick results but often lead to the yo-yo effect, when after a difficult period, dieters are back where they started or heavier than before. Intermittent fasting is a great way to achieve sustainable weight loss – not only to lose it, but also to keep it off, as confirmed by most Faster Intermittents who have done the Intermittent Fasting Challenge.
The key to sustainable weight loss is to be consistent and create a “new diet” lifestyle rather than doing it temporarily. For many people, Intermittent Fasting allows this because they can still enjoy their favorite foods every now and then, as long as they adjust their eating schedule.
How Intermittent Fasting Can Fast Track Your Weight Loss
For the 21-day Intermittent Fasting Challenge, we suggest starting with a 12/12 fasting schedule, gradually increasing to an 8/16 fast (click to learn more): 16-hour fast and 8-hour eating window. Taking small steps allows your body (and mind) to adjust to new eating patterns slowly. It has been proven to be most effective if your goal is to make intermittent fasting a long-term habit.
In a 2015 review pooling 40 different studies, participants who did intermittent fasting lost an average of 10 pounds over a 10-week period. Another study found that obese adults following an “alternate day” intermittent fasting schedule (eating 25 percent of their daily calories on one day, and eating normally the next day) lost up to 13 pounds (6 kg) in 8 weeks.
Intermittent fasting also succeeds where many weight loss regimens fail: targeting and reducing visceral fat. Visceral fat is internal fat that is stubborn and packed inside the abdominal organs. Over a period of six months, people on an intermittent fasting diet can shed 4-7% of visceral fat.

The 16:8 Diet And Heavy Lifting Helped Me Lose 70 Pounds’
So more than half (58%) of intermittent fasting starters lost at least 8 pounds (3.6 kg) after 1 month of intermittent fasting and 30% gained at least 12 pounds (5.4 kg).
Women who practice intermittent fasting typically lose up to 7 pounds (3.2 kg) of weight, while more than half of men gain 7–13 pounds (3.2–6 kg) of weight within the first month.
13% of people even reported 20 lbs. (9 kg) or more weight in their first month of intermittent fasting.
When it comes to age, you may be more likely to achieve better results from intermittent fasting if you are between the ages of 42-48.
How Intermittent Fasting Can Help You Lose Weight
In this age group, the average weight loss for intermittent fasting beginners is 20 pounds (9 kg) after the first month of fasting.
While weight loss is certainly the most desired result of Intermittent Fasting among most people who have started the Intermittent Fasting Challenge, it is not the only benefit that can be expected from fasting.
When we asked people to name other positive changes they noticed after starting Intermittent Fasting, we saw other big benefits.
