Dietitian Jillian Kubala, MS, RD, recommends paying attention to ingredients and nutritional information when choosing a protein powder.

“Look for protein powders that don’t have added sugar or are sweetened with stevia,” he says. “Avoid protein powders with artificial flavors, colors and preservatives. Pea protein, whey protein, collagen peptides, brown rice protein and hemp protein are all great. The smaller the serving, the better.”

For those looking to gain muscle without losing weight, it’s a good idea to drink a protein shake after a workout in addition to other meals throughout the day to get those extra calories and protein grams. For people looking to lose weight, times are different.

“If you have to opt for things like chips or cookies, it may be better and easier to have a protein shake that adds some nutrients to your diet rather than empty calories,” says Natalie Rizzo, MS, RD. If protein powders are substituted for unhealthy snacks, they can help boost your weight loss efforts. Jillian said they can reduce your hunger to keep you going.

However, eating in a calorie deficit is still important for weight loss. If you drink a protein shake after a workout, but still eat the same meals and snacks you do, you’re eating an extra two hundred calories a day, which can stall your progress. Always remember that your protein intake is still within your allotted calories per day, which should be determined with the help of your doctor or nutritionist.

“Protein shakes are a great way to add protein to your diet, especially if you’re short on time,” he says. “The best way to use protein powder is to make a quick, filling breakfast that you can take on the go.” If you skip breakfast or grab something small, a protein shake is a great meal replacement.

“I don’t recommend replacing an entire meal with a protein shake because you’re missing out on other nutrients found in fruits and vegetables, such as vitamins, minerals and fiber,” Natalie said. “However, it’s better to have protein in your diet if it’s good for you, for example, have a protein shake with a side of fruit for breakfast. For dinner, if you don’t have time for a sandwich, have a protein shake and a side salad.”

Not only are protein shakes and water boring, they also lack the nutrients you need for breakfast or as part of a meal. Jillian recommends mixing your protein powder with a cup of frozen fruit, a cup of greens (like kale or spinach) and unsweetened almond milk. Other additions include nut butters, chia seeds, flax seeds and unsweetened coconut.
