Food To Eat If You Have Gout – If you had asked me in the past if I had any idea that I would get gout, I would have laughed at you. In my opinion, either being overweight or getting old has gout. I know it sounds crazy, but this is my gout revelation.
A while ago I went for an iron injection. My fatigue was getting worse, the doctors found that my iron and hemoglobin levels were low, so I was given iron. I was told I might feel sick afterwards, but overall it should help me feel better. I decided to go back to the office after the rain. A bad idea. I have a bad migraine and I feel like I’m going to pass out. I ended up leaving work early in the morning, took two painkillers and slept until the next day. I was fine until Wednesday evening.
Food To Eat If You Have Gout
I went out for dinner at 11pm and started to feel weird. My legs are heavy and my calves are burning. I was sad when I walked, so I decided to leave. I woke up the next day with swollen and sore feet. Based on my limited knowledge of kidney failure at the time, leg swelling = water retention. So I took two tablets and thought it would be fine. By 6pm, my legs were on fire and I couldn’t walk. I texted my doctor and he said it might be gout and I would see my doctor the next morning. Long story short: The doctor diagnosed me with gout.
Gout Causes And Diet
From that day, I started watching what I eat. Gout gets worse when you eat foods that are high in purines. My gout was caused by iron in the past but since I no longer wanted to take medication, I decided to treat my gout naturally. I don’t want the gout to get worse or come back after a gout attack. When I’m socializing, I avoid all kinds of meat and poultry. I went on a full diet for a week. I cut out meat from all my diet after that. I still eat chicken once in a while but I avoid meat. I am happy to report that I have not had another gout attack since then. My diet is very limited now, which is really bad at times but honestly, I don’t want to feel that way again in my life. I can’t drive because I can’t handle it. I ended up selling my car and bought an automatic to make sure I didn’t have any trouble driving. I also have a cane because I cannot walk on one leg. This experience is not good and I will do something to avoid it.
Edit: a kidney specialist reminded me on Facebook to add that seafood is bad too. I think this is one of the biggest hurdles for me because I love shrimp and fish! I miss a lot of food and this is my experience. As IV said before, always consult your doctor and dietitian. We all have different experiences.
I found this wonderful article helpful in summarizing foods to avoid when dealing with gout.

A low purine diet is often recommended for people with hyperuricemia – too much uric acid in their blood – which can lead to gout and kidney problems. Purine in our food is broken down into uric acid in our body, reducing purine intake helps reduce uric acid levels.

Gout is caused by too much uric acid in your blood. Some uric acid forms sharp crystals that lodge in your bones, causing inflammation and pain. But you can help reduce the amount of uric acid in your body by following a low purine diet. Lowering uric acid levels can help prevent new crystals from forming, reducing gout attacks.
Purines are chemicals commonly found in certain foods and beverages. When your body breaks down these chemicals, uric acid is a byproduct. A low-purine diet that reduces foods and drinks that have high levels of purine reduces uric acid. It also recommends certain food choices that can lower uric acid levels in your body.
Anyone with high uric acid in their blood (hyperuricemia) can benefit from cutting down on purine-rich foods. This can help prevent gout in people with hyperuricemia who have not developed the disease. It can also help prevent existing gout from progressing and prevent other complications of hyperuricemia, such as kidney stones.
Although eating specific foods is not enough to get rid of gout, research shows that certain foods and drinks can help reduce uric acid in your body. Example:
