It’s not all hype, though. There are certainly some health benefits to adding lemon juice to your water. “The best thing about lemon juice is the antioxidants it contains,” says Kristin Kirkpatrick, RD, registered dietitian and manager of nutrition services at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute. “The high vitamin C content can help boost your immunity, improve iron absorption and help reduce the risk of certain cancers.”
Does Drinking Water And Lemon Help You Lose Weight
But can sipping on lemon water help you lose weight, detox your system and fire up your metabolism? We asked registered dietitians for the facts.

Some animal studies suggest that lemon compounds may help with weight loss, but the research is still too preliminary to know how lemon water affects people and weight.
Since lemons contain pectin, the same satiating fiber found in apples, some people claim that the juice will fill you up and in turn, help you shed pounds. But only a small amount of fiber (if any) is still present in the juice by the time you squeeze it into your water.
“Fiber, in general, is key in slowing down your digestion, and helping the entire digestive process work,” says Maggie Michalczyk, RD, a registered dietitian in Chicago. “Unfortunately, there is none of the fiber in the lemon juice itself.”
When it comes to boosting your metabolism? Unfortunately, experts cannot support this one either. “I never saw that connection,” Kirkpatrick said. “Some foods, like cayenne pepper, temporarily speed up metabolism through the thermic effect of food, but I haven’t seen any studies where lemons do the same.”
Lemon Juice For Weight Loss: How To Make And When To Drink It
However, if adding lemon to your water helps you drink more than you normally would, it can be beneficial. “It can help, but the benefit comes more from the actual water than the lemon you squeeze into it,” Michalczyk said. “Your metabolism thrives on water to maintain its functions. Think of it as a mean, lean, calorie-burning machine, and the gas in the tank is water.”
And while we love to believe that lemon water is the perfect “detox,” research doesn’t back up that claim. “This is a popular theory, but again, aside from the high content of vitamin C, which is also found in other foods, there is little scientific evidence to support that lemon juice detoxifies your system better than water,” Kirkpatrick said.
In fact, there is no need to “cleanse” your body at all, despite what a detox diet or liquid cleanse may tell you. “Our kidneys and liver do all the detoxification we need,” says Michalczyk.
It is best to include foods with high fiber such as oats, beans and legumes in your diet as part of a satisfying meal. Alternatively, lemon juice may serve best as a new tool for weight loss (say, drinking it instead of soda or other sugary drinks), rather than a magic bullet.
Can Lemon Water Help You Lose Weight? We Found Out
“Since it’s low in calories, it can help with overall calorie restriction for weight loss. But that’s the only effect it would have,” says Jason Ewoldt, RDN, LD, a wellness dietitian in the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living program.
Be careful of the side effects. “Strong acids like lemon juice can erode tooth enamel if they are in regular contact,” says Libby Parker, RD, a registered dietitian in San Luis Obispo, California. “If you drink lemon juice, be careful not to brush your teeth immediately after. Rinse your mouth with plain water.”
Brushing your teeth when they are exposed to an acid such as lemon juice can cause even more enamel erosion leading to cavities. To keep your teeth healthy, enjoy lemon juice in moderation.
